When the word “ice cream” hits your inbox, you immediately stop what you’re doing and read the email. That’s what I did when Crave Frozen Desserts emailed me a few weeks ago, asking if I’d like to stop in and try their stuff.
Crave is a small shop located just outside of Pittsburgh in the West Mifflin/Dravosburg area. In Pittsburgh, you hear a lot about Millie’s, but what I appreciate about Crave is that the nicest family owns the shop. I spent time talking with Debbie about her husband Andy’s background which was very extensive in the food and service industry. Debbie told me that Andy wanted to start something on his own, and this was it. He still works a day job and their entire family helps out to run the shop. Super nice!

Crave makes all of their ice creams right on site, using local cream from farms in the area, and all-natural flavors and plant dyes. Debbie said they get their stuff from Galliker’s Dairy in Johnstown. They offer your typical ice cream flavors like chocolate and vanilla as well as their own creations (for example, I sampled the “Velvet Elvis!”) They have traditional ice cream and non-dairy options that are made with a coconut base.
In addition to the Velvet Elvis scoop, I had a scoop of Salted Caramel which was DELICIOUS. I could have had a galloon of that. I enjoyed sitting and talking with Debbie and eating my ice cream. It’s nice to have a family-owned shop that recognizes the need for a variety of flavors and bases, with fresh, local ingredients.

You can follow Crave on Facebook or Instagram. They are located on 751 Pittsburgh McKeesport Blvd in Dravosburg. Stop in and enjoy some frozen desserts!
