Yesterday, I braved the snow and cold to run Cupid’s Chase 5K, a national run that went on at the same time in 24 cities in 10 states, benefiting Community Options, Inc., a non-profit that develops community-based homes and employment supports for people with disabilities.
This was only the second time I had run outside since November, so I was a little nervous I’d 1) Slip on the ice and hurt myself and/or 2) Freeze to death and wear out my lungs. Thankfully, none of those things happened. What some runners need to know is that running in the cold isn’t so bad. In fact, you’re sweating by the end of it. It’s all about the preparation, people.
So, what did I wear?
First, running tights. These things are awesome. I got a pair of Reebok tights from my mom for Christmas from Dick’s Sporting Goods, kind of like this pair. Just make sure you’re wearing the long ones in the cold. I also have a cute pair from Champion that are capri length for spring.
Next, your top. Or actually, tops…three of them. My innermost layer was a long sleeve UnderArmour shirt like this. I believe the one I actually wore was a generic brand of UnderArmour from Target, though. It works just as well. Next layer I wore was a long sleeved thermal shirt kind of like this. Top layer was a Nike half zip run top from Dick’s Sporting Goods, also courtesy of my mom for Christmas.
Finally, the accessories. I just wore normal socks and my feet were just fine. I also sported a pair of running gloves my mom bought me at REI (seriously, she’s the best personal shopper ever!) that were Manzella. My hands get cold all the time so I wanted to also bring handwarmers, but I forgot them at home. I was fine though. And on my head: a winter headband that was probably from 1996. It worked well, but my next cold weather running purchase will be this Nike Therma-FIT Running Headband.
Cupid’s Chase was fun, and so was running in the snow. It was good to feel the fresh air again and not stale, recycled gym air. UGH. My plan is to get back outside more now that it’s staying lighter longer and spring (and half marathon training) are right around the corner!
